Nobel Laureates and Twentieth-Century Physics
Cambridge University Press (2004)
Nobel Laureates and Twentieth-Century Physics
Cambridge University Press

'The bulk of the book is straightforward and highly readable chronological account of the Nobel Prize awards ... The plain language and clear descriptions of (in some cases) complex phenomena render this book an excellent read for a long journey.'
    CERN COURIER

'Mauro Dardo's book is about the Nobel prizes for physics from their inception in 1901 until the present. The book succeeds magnificently in presenting the remarkable advances made in our understanding of the physical world in the course of the past century.'
    The Times Higher Education Supplement

Reviews

'Noble endeavours and Nobel prizes appear in this exploration of modern physics through the people who discovered it.'
     New Scientist

'Dardo has been remarkably successful in assembling a year-by-year survey of the 20th century physics and its geniuses within 500 pages, well illustrated by many small historical, often informal, pictures and some helpful diagrams. ... dipping into a chapter is a delight that yields an absorbing read and readily leads one via cross-referencing to descriptions of both earlier and later achievements and Laureates.'
     Contemporary Physics

'The book is illustrated profusely with classic photographs of the physicists, along with diagrams and graphs to explicate their ideas. An appendix lists the prizes in chronological order. There is a glossary of useful physical terms, references, a select bibliography, and a good index. Highly recommended.'
    CHOICE

This is a fine history of physics in the 20th century, and also serves as a high-quality primer for the concepts that underlie quantum mechanics and the standard model of particle physics. Dardo has put together a well-illustrated, well-researched and interesting story.'
