Domenico Osella is a Professor of Chemistry (CHIM/03) at the Department of Science and Technological Innovation (DiSIT) of the  Università del Piemonte Orientale "A. Avogadro", Alessandria, Italy.

Research Activities

Osella has published over 220 papers and reviews in international scientific journals, and has advised the research of over 70  thesis students and doctoral candidates. Google Scholar parameters: H-index= 34, sum of the times cited= 4000, i10-index=122.

His current research interests encompass (a) the use of coordination compounds in the fields of medicine and biology, particularly for the development of anti-cancer drugs; (b) electrochemical studies of bioinorganic compounds for applications to bioelectrochemistry and electroremediation of degraded environments; and (c) applications of ESR and NMR spectroscopic techniques to bioinorganic chemistry, especially for the measurement of oxidative stress in the fields of environment and health.

His professional appointments have included a position on the Board of Directors of SCI (Italian Chemical Society) (1994/2000). He was a member of the Board of Directors and of the Academic Senate of the University Avogadro. He .is currently the Scientific Director of the local Research Unit, which belongs to the Consortium for "Metals in the Life and Environmental Sciences" (CIRCMSB, Bari). and of the European  Cooperation project in Science and Technology COST CM 1105  “Functional Metal Complexes that bind to Biomolecules”. Previously he has taken part in COST projects D1 (Coordination  Chemistry in the Context of Biological and Environmental Sciences), D8 (Chemistry of Metals in Medicine) D20 (Metallo Compounds in the Treatment of Cancer and Viral Diseases) and  D39 (Metallo Drug Design and Action).

He has acted as coordinator for numerous research and teaching projects funded by the European Union under the auspices of the Science, Erasmus  and Copernicus . He serves as a referee and is on the editorial boards of a number of international science journals. Osella has been a Visiting Professor at the University Chemical Laboratory in Cambridge, at the Academy of  Sciences of Czech Republich (Heyrovsky Institute) in Prague, and at the Ecole Nationale Superieure de Chimie in Paris.

He was appontied of the Royal Chemical Society Fellowship.

Teaching Activities

Osella teaches courses in BIOINORGANIC CHEMISTRY (for chemistry and biology ), INORGANIC CHEMISTRY (for chemistry and environmental science ), and  RADIOCHEMISTRY and ISOTOPIC CHEMISTRY  (for chemistry). He is also the coordinator for the doctoral programme in chemistry.
