Linux on a ACER 503 T

This is document is an very early phase of construction. Hope you still find it useful.

Specification

The detailed specifications (in german!) can be found on the german ACER site.

XF86-Configuration

I configured the X-Window system with sax (included in the SuSE distribution). It worked through without any incident. Afterwards I made some patches to adapt the Monitor settings and since it works fine. In order to emulate a three button mouse with X (in fvwm2 and in KDE) you have to enter "Emulate3Buttons" in the Section "Pointer" in my /etc/XF86Config.

Sound

The ACER 503 T contains a sound card that enables me to play sound. Currently I canīt record from /dev/audio.

To enable the sound card via ISA-PNP, my /etc/isapnp.conf might be helpful. It was generated by pnpdump. I uncommented the first of the multiple choice possibilities and didnīt modify anything but the IRQ from 5 to 10. It still may work with the original value.

Additional modules are needed, that are not included in the Kernel preconfigured by SuSE. The /usr/src/linux/.config file explains the options that are necessary to setup the kernel and modules compilation.

The sound modules must be loaded /etc/conf.modules with

alias char-major-14 sound
if you donīt want to load it by hand.

APM

I didnīt manage to get APM to work. The kernel with APM hangs very early in the boot sequence. Even the Patch from linuxmama was of no help.

PCMCIA

PCMCIA works fine, if you donīt choose the module, that comes with SuSE 6.0. They have worked out an alternative solution. In /etc/rc.config enter PCMCIA="i82365".
